How to EASILY get Tom Holland’s Hairstyle

Breakdown the whole situation

Can we first just take a second and admire the level of awesome that is Tom Holland, I mean this dude has a head of hair that looks great almost any way he styles it. Its no secret too that he has professionals helping him achieve great styles and looks but why cant you or I achieve something like this at home? Just like with most things in life, if you break it down and you have a good understanding of your tools-something like this can be achieved easily. 

So how do we break it down? Well lets start by identifying the style. For the finish it appears to be a natural to matte finish, so that helps with narrowing down the types of products we want to work with. We can also see some light texture there, especially on the left side so again this gives us some direction. Unfortunately these are the easy parts. The hard part is the haircut itself. 

To make this easy on yourself, I highly recommend that you take the photo (or whatever photo you want to go with, this will apply to most styles) to your barber and give them a visible reference for what you are going for. This isn’t a very complicated haircut fortunately, but you will need some length on both the top and sides to pull it off exactly. 

Another option is to take inspiration from this photo and apply it to your current style. An example of that would be to not have the length on the sides, but take inspiration from the length on the top, or the general shape and try to use that to create something with your own hairstyle. 

Again, getting the hair ready to style is the hardest part. For some this is the easiest part and the actual styling is the hardest, but Im going to help you there and make it super easy. 

Know your tools 

Knowing what your products do and how they react in the hair, is the best offense you can have when trying to get certain looks, or trying to get the best out of your hair. For example, knowing that we need to get a little texture and a natural to matte finish-it wouldn’t make much sense to use a high shine pomade or something that is very light in hold. Depending on your hair type we need something with a medium hold level, or even something stronger if your hair needs it to remain in place. Being as the style does have a certain level of “messy” to it, we definitely dont want something too polished up or something that has too much presence in the hair. 

Lets make this happen!

Alright time to bring this together. This is how I would do it using my own hair as reference. Its important to say that your steps might differ a bit from mine, but overall the process should be the same. 

Starting with clean hair (gotta have a fresh canvas) were gonna start with some pre-styling with our sidekick. This is the perfect product for what we are trying to do here because it provides both a helping of hold and texture. Its also a heat protectant up to 150°Celsius so that helps alot when we go into our next step-blow drying. 

The blowdryer is not to be feared! The blow dryer is our friend. In this step were not only activating the sidekick and getting that hold and texture to come out, but were also using the styling power of the blowdryer to get us the majority of the final look. 

What? You didnt know that a blowdryer styles the hair? It sure does! The heat is an extremely important tool as it not only dries the hair, but it creates volume, it introduces shape, and it can do many other things that we will talk about at a later date. 

Right now though we are using the heat and our comb, or brush-to direct the hair back on one side and back on the other side. The easiest way to do this is to create a part in your hair and separate the two sides. The longer side needs to be directed to the “corner” of your head, so not straight back but more so over-and-back. At the same time, the other part-the shorter part, does need to be directed straight back. This creates the separation we see in Tom’s hair with the two sections doing their own thing, but also coming together to create the look. 

After you feel like the structure of the style has taken root, its time to introduce the volume and texture. Switch from using the brush or comb, to your fingers on the long part side-and just run your fingers through it while you continue to dry it. This creates a bit of chaos in there and really brings out the texture. After the hair is all dry, make sure to run a bit of cold air through it for another minute or so. This closes the hair follicle and really helps seal in the style. 

Now its time for post styling and here is where we have some freedom. We know we want a matte finish or at the most, a natural finish and in my mind, one product really stands out that fits the bill-The Dynamite Clay. We will talk more in depth about the Dynamite Clay in our next post but this clay has a strong hold, matte finish, and high texture. This also works really well with our pre-styler so im sure you can see where this is going, hopefully the finished result is coming into view as much for you as it is for me. 

Just in case however, what your going to be doing is taking a small amount of clay ( you can add more, but you cant take some away) and you want to focus again on the two different sections, taking the longer part to its point, and the shorter straight back again. You want to make sure to work the clay into the hair as best you can to encourage the best result. 

As your doing this you want to also keep in mind that you dont want to make it too compressed, remember its not supposed to be too neat. Here’s a little trick for that I like to do. Start by getting the product worked all in, and then make it as neat as you can, all combed up and looking nice and proper (stick with me on this ). Once you do that, take your fingers again and lightly give it a toss, dont disrupt it completely, just a nice light tussle to encourage both sections to blend together a little and break up in sections. This gives it that lightly messed up look that we see in the reference photo. Do this until you’re happy with it and your done friend! 

And there we have it! 

Thats all there is to it! You now have an awesome style, and hopefully it was super easy for you! I will admit that sometimes it does take some practice to get it down super quickly, but once you do this alot over and over, you can get a style like this nailed down in a matter of minutes. On top of that it looks great in almost any scenario-work, dinner parties, dates, even casual hang outs. I think the versatility and wide-spread achievability of this style really is the reason for the popularity that surrounds it, and now that you know its secrets you can go forth and use it to your styling advantage anytime you want.
