What's The Deal?
By now you'd have to be living under a rock to not have heard of Argan oil. Its everywhere these days! You can go almost anywhere and find it in some form. Usually when something is this accessible and used as much as Argan oil seems to be, naturally it becomes a bit suspect to some people, and for good reason. How can you tell the difference between a fad, and something that you can actually benefit from? As usual the answers can be found by strictly looking at the facts.
Liquid Gold
Lets start with where Argan Oil comes from! One might think a miraculous hair additive like this might be thought up in a lab somewhere, but No! Argan Oil actually comes from the Argan tree! Which is found in southwestern Morocco. The oil is extracted from the fruit that is found on that tree and actually has been used for a variety of things in Morocco since the 13th century. There are a wide variety of things this oil is good for, which is why its known as "liquid gold".Swiss Army Oil
I like to think of Argan Oil as the "Swiss Army Knife" of Oils. Its one oil, but it does so many different things! Its amazing when you really sit down and look at the various things this offers, especially considering its just one single oil. Lets do a quick rundown shall we?
-
Dry scalp? Argan oil can help by hydrating the skin when dealing with afflictions like dry scalp or dandruff. It also assists by acting as an anti-inflammatory on the scalp.
-
Dull or flat hair? Argan oil contains fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E which is immediately adds life and a healthy glow back to your locks.
- Hair too Poofy? Going over to the other end of the spectrum-for folks that don't have a problem with flat or dull hair, who instead struggle with hair thats got too much "life" in it, Argan oil got your back on that too! Adding in a bit of this will help tame it back down and keep things looking and feeling amazing.
- Heat protectant! Some folks believe that using a blow dryer is dangerous from the heat. There's a lot that could be said on both sides of that issue, but it doesn't really matter in the end because your old pal Argan Oil is a natural heat protectant!
- Silky smooth hair.. seriously have you ever tried it? Trust me. its unbelievably soft.
How Do I Use It?
Using this awesome oil is just as cool as the benefits that it offers. Mainly because you can really decide how you want to use it, theres no one set way or any "rules" that suggest how it MUST be used. You can use it as a hair mask, or a scalp treatment if you like-by just loading your hair up with it and massaging it into your scalp and roots, then washing it out after. You can use it as an assistant to your pre styler if you like- try adding in a drop or two onto your damp hair right before you spray your ByVilain Sidekick spray. You will get all the benefits of the sidekick as usual, but your hair will also be nicely hydrated and prepped for whatever finishing product you decide to use.
You can also just do what I like to do sometimes on lazy days, where I don't really have to worry about what my hair looks like, and just take a couple of drops and run it through my hair, just to feel how soft it makes it. The key is make sure you don't use too much. You can overdo it and make your hair greasy if you add too much, so start with just a couple drops and work your way up until your hair feels super soft and looks fantastic.
The real deal
Now-a-days Argan oil is definitely a buzz word. Its become so popular that folks are putting it in everything, and adding it to everything. Ive been asked several times how people are supposed to know what's real, whats good, and what they should use? For me its very simple, I look for the products that use pure oils only. A lot of times your hair oils, beard oils, tonics, grooming oils, etc. are going to be made using a collection of pure oils-which is your best bet for finding something of good quality. Looking at the listings and ingredient labels can really help out too. There are some products out there that are listed as "Argan oil products" but when you look at their ingredient lists, Argan oil may be in there-but theres a bunch of other things added in as well, or Argan might be all the way at the bottom of the list, and a handful of fillers are listed above it. Argan Oil doesn't need any help to be awesome and to provide all the things we've talked about, and actually using something that contains all those fillers might even inhibit some of the results it offers. Going pure is always your best bet.
Looking for Grooming oils or tonics that contain Argan Oil, and other oils too is something I highly recommend. We already know Argan Oil is amazing, and provides so much. Imagine having a product that not only offers that, but also contains 4-5 other oils that offer their own set of functions aside from the Argan oil. Yes...those exist!
Try It For Yourself!
I'm asked all the time by folks on YouTube how they can make their hair feel better, look less dull, not be dry/itchy and all the time I'm recommending people try products that contain Argan oil. I know its easy to look at this oil as some kind of fad, or something people just say out of habit because they hear it all the time- but this is one of those instances where people are recommending it left & right, because it works! This isn't some product that was cooked up, and it works for one person, and it might not work for you, this is an oil thats been used for years upon years upon years for its amazing benefits. With that kind of track record, I think its safe to assume that Argan Oil checks out.
