5 Hair Care Tips for Men: Build a Routine That Works

A useful hair-care routine starts with your scalp, your hair’s texture and the products you use. Cleanse when you need to, condition the lengths, handle tangles gently and keep heat under control. You do not need a bathroom full of products to get those basics right.

Use these five tips as a starting point, then change one thing at a time. That makes it easier to spot whether your hair needs a more thorough wash, less finishing product or a different way of drying.

1. Wash when your scalp needs it

There is no single shampoo schedule for every man. An oily scalp and daily styling-product use can call for a different routine from dry curls. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing according to how dirty or oily your hair gets.

Apply shampoo mainly to the scalp and rinse thoroughly. If your roots still feel coated after washing, check your application and rinsing before automatically using a larger amount. By Vilain Rush Shampoo is a current cleansing option in the shop; follow the directions on the bottle.

2. Put conditioner where it helps

Conditioner makes hair easier to manage after washing. Pay particular attention to the lengths and ends. For fine, straight hair, keep the application towards the ends; dry or curly hair may need it through more of the length.

Start with a modest amount of By Vilain Rush Conditioner, distribute it and rinse as directed. If your finished style feels heavy, adjust the amount and placement next time. A rinse-out conditioner should not be treated as an overnight mask or leave-in product.

3. Work through tangles without pulling

When a comb catches, stop and separate the knot gently instead of forcing it through. Work on a small section at a time, beginning near the ends and moving upwards as the tangles release.

A wide-tooth tool such as the By Vilain XL Comb gives you more space between the teeth. For thick curls, detangling while conditioner is in the hair can help. Straight hair can be left to dry a little before combing. Keep a finer styling comb for creating a neat shape once the hair is detangled.

4. Dry gently, then build your style

Squeeze out excess water and blot with a towel instead of scrubbing your head. If you use a dryer, keep it moving and use a low heat setting. Follow your heat-protectant’s directions; protection is no reason to turn the temperature up.

Build the direction of the hairstyle while drying, then add finishing product gradually. If you apply a large scoop of wax to hair that is still lying in the wrong direction, you can end up with weight instead of the shape you wanted.

5. Adjust the routine to the problem

Greasy roots, tangled ends and a flat fringe are different problems. Before replacing every product, decide which one you are trying to solve. For a flat style, experiment with the drying direction and product amount. For difficult ends, review conditioning and detangling.

For persistent scalp irritation or unexpected hair loss, get advice from a dermatologist rather than treating it as a styling problem. For everyday care, a consistent routine is more useful than a succession of homemade mixtures.

A simple routine to try

On a wash day: shampoo the scalp, condition the lengths, detangle gently, blot dry and style. Between washes: check whether the scalp needs cleaning before adding more product. If curls are your main challenge, use our curly-hair routine to adapt those steps.
