Men’s Festive Outfits: Christmas Parties and New Year’s Eve

Choose a festive outfit by the invitation and venue first. Black tie, a relaxed dinner and an outdoor celebration call for different clothes. Once the level of formality is clear, use fit, texture and one or two accessories to make the outfit feel personal.

Black tie

A dinner jacket, matching evening trousers, a suitable dress shirt, bow tie and formal shoes are the starting point for conventional black tie. A normal business blazer is not automatically a dinner jacket. Check the host’s guidance if the invitation uses a variation such as creative black tie.

A dinner party

For a relaxed dinner, tailored trousers with a knit or shirt and an optional jacket can work well. A suit worn less formally is another option if it fits the setting. Ask the host when the invitation gives no clue; guessing is less useful than a quick check.

A house party

Let the host’s plan set the level. A casual gathering may suit clean jeans, a knit and comfortable shoes. A dressed-up house party can justify tailoring. Bring any requested contribution and choose clothes you can sit and move in comfortably.

A club or bar

Check the venue’s entry requirements rather than assuming every club wants the same outfit. Dark trousers or jeans and a considered top can be a useful base. Plan for the journey and cloakroom as well as the temperature indoors.

An outdoor celebration

Use layers, a weather-appropriate coat and comfortable footwear. A warm hat is a practical part of the outfit. Do not sacrifice warmth or safe movement to preserve a hairstyle; reshape the hair lightly once you are inside.

Add detail without crowding the outfit

A pocket square, watch or textured jacket can be enough. Choose pieces that work together rather than wearing every formal accessory at once. Try the complete outfit in advance, including shoes and outerwear.

Finish with a familiar grooming routine

Style the hair in a way you have practised and tidy facial hair where needed. A side part, loose slick back, curls or a comfortable bun can all suit a dressed-up occasion. Formal clothes do not require one hair length or texture.
