Men’s Fringe Haircut: Shape, Styling and Maintenance

A men’s fringe haircut brings the front section towards or across the forehead. Its success depends on the way your hair grows, the length at the front and the texture you want. The Slikhaar tutorial demonstrates one version; a fringe can also be blunt, choppy, wavy or softly side-swept.

What to ask your barber for

Show where you want the fringe to finish when the hair is dry. Discuss whether you want a soft edge or a solid line and how much contrast you want at the sides. Curly hair can sit shorter when dry, so the visible resting length matters more than a measurement taken while it is stretched.

Prepare the hair and tools

Keep a reference photo, a suitable comb or brush, a dryer if you use one, and your chosen styling product nearby. Start with hair that is free of heavy buildup. If shampooing, follow with conditioner where your lengths need it and rinse as directed. Blot rather than rub with a towel.

Set the direction before adding the finish

Start by guiding the roots forwards. If the front has a cowlick, use the brush to direct it gently across before settling it forwards. Avoid repeatedly pulling the ends down while leaving the roots pointing back.

Choose the hold and shine

Use a light touch of matte clay for separation. Flow Pomade creates a softer, shinier alternative if that is your aim; it is not the same finish as a dry, textured crop. Pinch a few sections rather than coating the entire fringe.

Adjust the result to your hair

A fringe that splits may be following a cowlick or carrying too much product. A fringe that hangs flat may need lighter finishing product or a different cut. Keep it clear enough to see comfortably and trim when the shape, rather than a calendar, needs attention.
