Grow the right shape

Ask your barber to preserve enough length for the curls to sit around the face and neck. The dry silhouette matters more than a measurement on stretched hair. If your hair is currently short, plan the intermediate cuts so the sides do not become awkward while the top catches up.

Detangle before shaping

Work gently through small sections and release knots from the ends upwards. Use conditioner where needed and follow its directions. Once the curls are arranged, avoid repeatedly brushing them out if you want their natural grouping to remain visible.

Set the curls away from the face

Finish without flattening the curls

Can straight hair achieve the same result?

Straight hair can copy the length and swept direction, but it will not gain the same curl pattern from pomade. Choose a looser straight version or discuss other options with a stylist. Repeatedly curling the entire head is a different maintenance commitment.

Keeping it wearable between washes

Refresh only the areas that need reshaping and avoid stacking product on top of buildup. Tie the hair loosely when needed, without pulling at the hairline. Trim when the ends or outline need attention while preserving the length you are growing.
