How to Prepare for a Haircut: A Barber Appointment Checklist

Before a haircut, choose a few useful reference photos, decide how much daily styling you want and explain what is not working with your current cut. Good preparation gives your barber a clear brief while leaving room to adapt the style to your hair.

Bring the right references

Use two or three photos showing the front, sides and back where possible. Say what you like in each: the fringe, the amount of height or the softness around the ears. A celebrity’s face can distract from the actual cut, so point to the hair details you want.

Describe your normal morning

Tell your barber whether you air-dry, use a dryer or want a style that takes very little effort. Mention hats, helmets, sport and how often you can return for a trim. A sharp fade may look excellent but need more upkeep than a softer outline.

Arrive with hair they can assess

Ask the salon whether to wash beforehand; some appointments include washing, while curl specialists may want to see your usual dry shape. Avoid heavy buildup or an unusual styling routine that disguises how your hair normally falls. Follow the salon’s own preparation instructions.

Explain growth patterns and previous problems

Point out a cowlick, a crown that sticks up or a fringe that splits. Explain what you liked and disliked about your last cut. Be specific about the amount of length you are willing to lose, particularly if you are growing the hair.

Agree on the cut before it starts

Confirm the shortest side length, the fringe position and whether the top will connect to the sides. Ask your barber to show what they mean by taking off a small amount. If the reference is unrealistic for your current length, discuss a grow-out plan or an alternative.

Leave with a repeatable routine

Before leaving, ask how to dry the cut, how much finishing product to use and which tool creates the demonstrated result. Check the shape from more than one angle and mention anything you want adjusted while you are still in the chair.
